When your washing machines suffer, your business will inevitably suffer as well. Just one “Out of Order” sign could have a significant impact on your profits. Although it isn’t necessary for you to become trained in the art of washing machine and dryer maintenance, it is important that you know the basics of commercial washing machine maintenance. The tips we’ve listed below will help you prevent both minor and major damage, reducing the need for repairs.
Commercial Washing Machine Maintenance
Use the Provided Manual. This is an obvious tip, perhaps, but it’s worth stating just the same. Every machine is different, so be sure to review your specific machine’s instructions and follow them as best you can. You can also check the manufacturer’s website. For example, if you have a Speed Queen washer, check out this webpage for troubleshooting assistance.
Leave the Loading Doors Open. If the washer won’t be used again for an extended period of time, leave the door open so that the wash drum can fully dry. This will prevent the drum from developing a musty, unpleasant smell.
Check the Filter Screens. About once a year, you need to check the filter screens in the fill hose. Look for debris or damage, and clean or replace them if necessary. These screens will become blocked by small particles otherwise, which can prevent water from flowing into the machine.
Check the Hoses and Belts. About once a month, check the hoses. If you see any signs of deterioration such as cracks, blisters, or general wear, replace the hose immediately. You should also check the belts that lead from the motor to the drum. If they’re fraying, splitting, or otherwise damaged, replace them right away. You may want to replace them twice a year regardless to reduce the chance of a machine breaking down.
Clean the Drums. Remove dirt and soap buildup in the drum through regular cleanings (preferably using the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning product). These deposits will accumulate over time if they aren’t cleaned away, and they could cause clothes to develop an odd odor. You should also wipe down the gasket between the door and the drum.
When in Doubt, Call in a Pro. Ideally, you will have purchased your washing machines from a distributor or manufacturer that offers great customer service and highly-trained repair technicians. So contact your provider if you need more maintenance tips, you’re desperate for troubleshooting help, or you want to schedule a repair.
These preventive maintenance tips will help you avoid more costly repairs and reduce your need for professional repair services.
